UI setups: profile strings, import and export
Updated 1 Nov 2026 · text only: we don't host profile strings until we can check what's in them
Most big add-ons can turn your settings into a block of text and read it back. That's how players share a UI, and how you move your own layout to an alt or a new computer. A few minutes of care keeps a pasted string from wiping a setup you spent an evening on.
Where to find import and export
Before you import
- Export your current profile and paste it into a text file. That's your way back.
- Check which add-ons the string is for. Importing an ElvUI string into an ElvUI without the matching plugins leaves gaps.
- Create a new profile and import into that, so your old one stays untouched.
- For add-ons that run code (Plater scripts, WeakAuras), read what the import window shows and only accept strings from people you trust.
- /reload after importing, then check each part of the screen before your next dungeon.
Move your own setup to another character
- Most add-ons keep profiles per account. Pick the same profile on the new character, or use Copy From.
- Key bindings and macros can be account-wide or per character. Check the Key Bindings menu.
- For a new computer, copy the WTF folder from _forever_ as well as Interface/AddOns. See backing up WTF.
Sharing yours
Post a description and screenshot of your setup in the forum's UI talk board. Keep strings off the forum for now: we'll add a checked way to share them later.
FAQ
What is a profile string?
A block of text an add-on produces from your settings. Paste it into the same add-on on another computer or character and the settings come back. It's settings, not the add-on itself: you still need the add-on installed.
Is importing a profile string safe?
Layout-only strings are. Some add-ons, like Plater and WeakAuras, can carry scripts that run in your game. Import those only from people you trust, and read what the add-on shows you before you confirm.
Do retail or Classic strings work in Forever?
Often, if the add-on's Forever build uses the same settings format. Expect missing frames or options that don't exist in Forever. Export your own profile first so you can go back.
