Add-on troubleshooting

Updated 1 Nov 2026 · for WoW Forever; paths use the _forever_ folder

Lua errors pop up

  1. Install BugSack and BugGrabber. Errors are collected quietly and shown when you click the minimap icon.
  2. Read the first line of the first error. The folder after Interface/AddOns/ names the add-on at fault; a Libs folder points to the add-on that bundles it.
  3. If the path isn't clear, disable half your add-ons, /reload and repeat what caused the error. Keep halving until it stops.
  4. Report it to the author with the add-on version, that you play WoW Forever (not retail or Classic) and the first error copied as text.

An add-on is missing from the AddOns list

  1. Check the folder: the add-on must be in _forever_/Interface/AddOns, not _retail_ or _classic_.
  2. Check the depth: the .toc file sits one level down, AddOns/Name/Name.toc, with no extra wrapper folder.
  3. Check the name: a folder called Name-main next to a Name.toc won't load. Rename the folder to match the .toc.
  4. Exit the game fully. New add-ons are only picked up when the game starts; /reload is not enough.

Add-on settings reset after a restart

  1. Full guide with a one-minute test: see "Add-on settings not saving" under Fix guides.
  2. Settings are saved when you log out or /reload. If the game crashes, changes since the last save are lost.
  3. Check that the WTF folder isn't read-only and isn't inside a cloud-sync folder that can roll files back.
  4. Look in WTF/Account/<account>/SavedVariables: the game keeps the previous copy of each file with a .bak ending. With the game closed, rename the .bak copy to .lua to restore it.
  5. During the beta many players lost settings on every restart because of a client bug, reported fixed before launch. If it happens on live, post on the forum.

Turn every add-on off at once

  1. On the character screen click AddOns, then Disable All, then Okay. Your add-ons stay installed with their settings.
  2. Log in. If the problem is gone, an add-on caused it: enable them again a few at a time.
  3. To turn them back on, open the same list and click Enable All.

Start with a clean UI

  1. Close the game.
  2. In the _forever_ folder rename Interface to Interface_old, WTF to WTF_old and Cache to Cache_old. Renaming instead of deleting keeps everything for later.
  3. Start the game. It rebuilds the folders with default settings and no add-ons.
  4. Copy back single add-ons from Interface_old/AddOns and their files from WTF_old/Account/<account>/SavedVariables as you need them.

Show Lua errors without an add-on

  1. Type /console scriptErrors 1 in chat to have the game show Lua errors in a window.
  2. Type /console scriptErrors 0 to hide them again. With BugSack installed you don't need this.

FAQ

Why does my add-on show "Out of date"?

Its .toc lists a different interface number than the client. Get the Forever file from the author's page, or tick Load out of date AddOns on the character screen as a stopgap.

How do I disable all add-ons in WoW Forever?

On the character select screen click AddOns, then Disable All. They stay installed; Enable All turns them back on.

Where are add-on settings stored?

In _forever_/WTF/Account/<account>/SavedVariables, plus per-character folders under the realm and character name. Back up the whole WTF folder before big changes.

Not solved? Ask in the forum's Help board with the first lines of the error.
