Install WoW Forever add-ons by hand on Windows

Updated 1 Nov 2026 · folder name _forever_ Reported until we confirm it on the live client

Default folder: C:\Program Files (x86)\World of Warcraft\_forever_\Interface\AddOns

Steps

  1. Open the Battle.net app, pick World of Warcraft, and choose World of Warcraft: Forever in the game version menu above Play.
  2. Click the gear next to Play and choose Show in Explorer. Open _forever_, then Interface, then AddOns. Create Interface and AddOns if they aren't there yet.
  3. Download the add-on from its author's page. Pick the file marked for Forever when there is one.
  4. Right-click the zip and choose Extract All. Don't open the zip and drag from inside it: Windows sometimes leaves files behind.
  5. Move the extracted folders into AddOns. Each folder must hold a .toc file directly: AddOns\Bartender4\Bartender4.toc.
  6. Exit the game fully and start it again. The add-on shows up in the AddOns list on the character screen.

Common errors

Windows asks for administrator permission when I copy

The default install sits in Program Files, which Windows protects. Click Continue. To avoid it for good, install the game outside Program Files, for example in C:\Games.

The add-on folder ends in -main or -master

That's a GitHub source download. Rename the folder to match the .toc file name inside it, or better, download a file from the repository's Releases instead: those include libraries.

I see the add-on folder twice, one inside the other

The zip had a wrapper folder. Move the inner folder (the one holding the .toc) up into AddOns and delete the empty outer one.

Windows hides file extensions, so I can't see .toc

In File Explorer choose View → Show → File name extensions.
